Survivor Celebration - Inspiring and Empowering Cancer Survivors

Rebecca Lynne Hoban Hines(1953 - 2009)
Rebecca Lynne Hoban Hines passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at her home in Lompoc, Calif., after a lengthy and courageous battle against cancer. She was 56 years old.
Service: Private celebrations of Becky's life will be held in the future. One will be held in Lompoc, Calif., and another in Fort Worth.

Memorials: The family requests donations to be made to the American Cancer Society or the Lompoc Hospital Foundation.

Becky was born June 20, 1953, to David and Grace Hoban in Kokomo, Ind. The family moved to Fort Worth in 1956 where Becky attended Fort Worth ISD schools and graduated from R.L. Paschal High School. After high school, Becky received a BSN degree from Texas Woman's University.
As a teen, Becky developed an interest in horses and rodeo. During college, Becky entertained the crowds as a bullfighter and rodeo clown in all-girl rodeos. She also raised and trained her own horse. Becky's rodeo activities are documented in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth.

After nursing school, Becky earned her private pilot's license while living and working in Dallas. Because of an interest in the sea, she earned an open water dive certification. As her experience grew, she decided that she would move to West Palm Beach, Fla. Eventually, she moved to the Florida Keys to obtain her diving instructor certificate. After she gained some instructor experience, she moved to Grand Cayman to continue her work as an instructor. After a couple of years as a dive instructor, Becky returned to Florida to resume her nursing career.

Beckys nursing career was diverse. She worked in the ER, the OR, pre-op, post-op, at a federal prison, an Air Force Base, and on cruise ships. It was a traveling nurse assignment that brought her to Lompoc, Calif. She was known as a friendly, caring advocate for her patients.

Along with her nursing career, she spent several enjoyable years working for vintners Richard and Thekla Sanford. Becky radiated an uncommon joy for life that drew people to her. Her passions included fishing, exploring the great outdoors, food, wine, pets, birding and family. Spending time with the friends she met while working in the local medical community and wine industry brought her much joy. An irreplaceable spirit, she will be missed by all who knew her.

The family wishes to thank her doctors, co-workers, and friends from Lompoc Medical Center, the Family Practice Clinic at VAFB, the Lompoc, and Santa Maria valley medical communities. Special thanks to Dr. Thomas Lossing and his office for filling Becky's visits with humor and hope.

Survivors: Her husband, Brad of Lompoc, Calif.; father, David Hoban (Clinta) of Fort Worth; brother, Mark Hoban (Leighanne) of Fort Worth; brother, Richard Hoban (Kristi) of Fort Worth; niece, Sarah Pennebaker (Sid) of Springtown; nephews, Jeffrey Hoban of Fort Worth, Asher Karnes of Boston, Mass.; nieces, Alynn Karnes of Boston, Mass., Austen Karnes of Fort Worth and Avery Karnes of Weatherford, Okla.
